When is the "big business" of child care too big for our little kids?

As a family child care provider and entrepreneur of sorts, I know that parents depend on me to support their families and to make sure their young children begin school ready to learn.

School Lunch Prices Spike With Fuel Costs

The implications of rising fuel costs extend beyond drivers. Even the cost of school lunches will spike this fall as food and gas prices have risen and federal subsidies have not kept up with the added costs, according to an article on MSNBC.com.

School districts across the country are feeling the pinch. From the MSNBC article:

Kids' Big Questions

Earlier this week, my 12-year-old son told me he was a little nervous about asking a girl in his class if she wanted to go out, and he wanted my advice.

My rather doltish response: "Um, where are you going to go?"

When Public Education Is No Longer Free

Public education, which is a free service guaranteed by the California Constitution, is no longer free. According to the Los Angeles Times, various school districts are asking parents to fork over cash in an effort to hold onto teachers after proposed budget cuts by Gov.

College Campus Deemed "Too Dangerous" for Childcare

"Safety" has now become the latest excuse for a college trying to duck responsibility for childcare. Ogeechee Technical College president Dawn Cartee announced the closure of the campus childcare center in Statesboro, GA, arguing that colleges are dangerous places for small kids. In a March 28 letter to parents, according to an article in The Statesboro Herald, Cartee wrote:

Are We Entitled?

Introducing . . .

Hi, I’m Miriam Peskowitz, and starting now, I’ll be blogging here at MomsRising.org. I’m the author of a book called The Truth Behind the Mommy Wars: Who Decides What Makes a Good Mother. I also write a blog of my own, Playground Revolution.com. My dreams about motherhood, parenting, and families share quite a lot with those of Kristin and Joan and the whole team behind MomsRising and the Motherhood Manifesto. Like them, I see the big picture. I’m confident that political and cultural change could make family life and work easier.
