Healthy Families has been a health-saver, if not a life-saver, for my family.

Healthy Families has been a health-saver, if not a life-saver, for my family. I'm self-employed and have to provide my own insurance. Four years ago, my older daughter's school wanted her put on ADD meds to see if they would help with her learning disabilities.

The Momonomics of Healthcare

One of my best friends called me this week and told me that she just started clipping coupons for the first time in her life. All across the country, moms and dads are sitting down at their kitchen tables and figuring out how to make their money stretch farther. If we are thinking carefully about our money, it's only fair that our leaders do the same. How?

Healthcare: When Women Pay More

I'm a self-proclaimed optimist and hopeful about the "yes, we can" message emanating from Washington. But I felt as if I'd been kicked in the gut last week when I read a New York Times article by Robert Pear about price gauging in health policies for women.

The first day of school (with pink eye)

My two children have received excellent public health benefits in San Francisco since before they were born. I qualified for no-cost Medi-Cal during both pregnancies though my partner and I were both self-employed. After my children were born, this coverage has allowed me to focus on taking care of our kids - now ages 5 and 2.5 - rather than get a job just for the healthcare benefits.

The long term impact of my girls' year without healthcare

I moved back to Tustin, CA in December 2006 after leaving a man who had been abusive and a marriage that was falling apart. While I was looking for work, we were on Medi-Cal but I did not want to stay on for long because I felt others needed it more than me.

Governor Signs Budget With Cuts to Children’s Health; SCHIP Reauthorization Needed in Early 2009

After months of stalemate, a state budget is finally in place. Penny-wise and pound-foolish, the significant cuts to children's health care in the 2008-09 budget will reverse a decade of progress in covering our state's children and cause much costlier problems down the road.

More On Our Broken Healthcare System

Cross-posted at MotherTalkers.com.

Here is yet another anecdote about our broken healthcare system.

My father's company is asking all workers to take a blood test for cholesterol, prostate cancer and other illnesses. If the employees are not healthy, the company plans to force them on a diet or raise their health insurance rates by $1,500.

"Is that even legal?" I asked him.

Your Legislators Need to Hear From You: Dropping A Quarter Million Children From Health Coverage is Unacceptable

Take Five Minutes to Tell Your Legislators not to Cut Children’s Health!

Behind closed doors, the Big 5 – our four legislative leaders and Governor Schwarzenegger – are working to finalize California’s budget. Among the key items for debate remains the Semi-Annual Reporting proposal for children enrolled in Medi-Cal.

KidsRising? Your Kids' Voices Needed to Move CA Legislators

Right now, approximately 763,000 kids don't have healthcare coverage -- a number that is going up each year. In fact, now 1 in 8 kids nationwide don't have healthcare coverage, many more than just last year. Despite the outcry from many Californians, the legislature just isn't getting the message that all kids need healthcare coverage.
