What the BLEEP is a documentary about fatherhood doing on MomsRising??

Dana Glazer's picture

Hello! My name is Dana Glazer and I’m making a feature documentary film, titled The Evolution of Dad, which explores in a deep way the role of fatherhood – how it has evolved up to now, where it is presently and how it continues to change. The film promises to be entertaining, insightful and profound.

But why is a project devoted to fatherhood presented on a site that’s primary focus is on the rights of moms? The answer is simply that the only way to further ideas like work/family balance and gender equity, is to have dads be included in the conversation.

With the exception of divorced dads and stay-at-home dads, most fathers don’t immediately see how what’s going on in our culture immediately impacts them and their families. It’s invisible to them. They have been taught to believe that being a good dad solely revolves around making a good living. This is what our culture teaches. Most fathers can’t see how the frustration of their wives at their absence around the house and with the kids has anything to do with them, because they are doing what they were trained to do – as their fathers did before them. For many dads, there’s a sadness and sense of loss about not being more involved with their families, but they have been conditioned to believe that this is just how it is.

This is where our film comes in: to entertain, to challenge assumptions and to profoundly impact. Our approach is not just to reach out to dads who get what’s going on, but to connect to those millions of fathers who think none of this has anything to do with them. Only by making these dads more aware can change really have a fighting chance.

So, whether you are a dad or a mom or just someone who is passionate about making the world a better place, I welcome your thoughts, your feedback and anything else you’d like to share. Thank you for your time.

Dana H. Glazer is the director of The Evolution of Dad Documentary Project as well as a father of two young sons. For more information, please visit www.evolutionofdad.com.

Glaring absence

It would be nice if there were some mention of legislation towards presumptive, rebuttable joint custody in the event of divorce. Do the organizations on this blog support joint custody legislation?

With feminist groups such as NOW fighting to exclude fathers from children's lives just about every year, and state legislators financially incentivized to increase the flow of child support in their states, fathers seem regarded as an afterthought in many feminist organizations, if not regarded as outright criminals for merely being male.

The bonhomie on this blog seems artificial given the absence of this issue for discussion, an issue which affects men, women and children.

Dads on Mom's Rising

He gets it. That's why he's on. He can get beyond gender and expose the issue for what it is. It is how parenting is treated in this country. Not mom parenting/ female parenting. The financial impact on a family is when a parent loses an income when they become a parent. That is the problem in this country. If the job paid even $50,000 a year with benefits, that alone would remove half of issues. It is an impossible position to be in whomever makes the sacrifice to raise their own children. I have taken issue with the title of this website from the get go. It ought to be Parents Rising. Terms like mom and dad are playing right into the status quo. It will get us nowhere. Sexism is sexism. How do we expect 'them' to change their thinking but now change our own? We cannot.

Re: making childcare more affordable

I just wanted to let every parent know about this new service available through http://www.Barterbabies.net. Parents visit this site to exchange childcare with other parents in the area instead of having to pay for it.

This site was developed mainly to help single parents who are struggling to make ends meet (other parents are also welcome to use this site, as we could really use your support right now.) We knew that there had to be a way to make childcare more affordable and finally after much thought came up with an idea that will work with enough support from the parents to run and maintain the website. This childcare site is different from all of the others, b/c you only pay to post your childcare ad and after that your childcare is free, instead of posting a free ad and paying someone hourly or weekly to watch your child.

If you're unable to watch someone else's child, you can exchange other items (toys, clothing, etc) and still receive childcare from another parent on the site for free! All you have to do is pay for the childcare ad that you post (one post costs $4.95) and the childcare is completely free! There are a lot of parents in your area that need childcare. Why not help each other by posting your childcare needs and swap with each other on the Barter Babies site? You have nothing to lose and a lot to save, so register and post your ad today!

Currently there are over 550 members on the site.

There are a lot of parents that view the site on a daily basis to see if there is a childcare ad posted that fits their needs.

If you have any questions, please send me an email and I will get back to you within 24 hours.

Thanks,

Marica
