    Army Mom Shows Up for Duty with Kids -- A Stunt or Act of Necessity?

    Lisa Pagan, a former active duty member of the Army and mother of two toddlers, was called up from the "ready reserves" to report for duty this week for possible deployment to Iraq. She told the Army that she had no one to care for her small children if she was sent overseas because of her husband's travel work schedule.

    School Lunch Prices Spike With Fuel Costs

    The implications of rising fuel costs extend beyond drivers. Even the cost of school lunches will spike this fall as food and gas prices have risen and federal subsidies have not kept up with the added costs, according to an article on MSNBC.com.

    When Public Education Is No Longer Free

    Public education, which is a free service guaranteed by the California Constitution, is no longer free. According to the Los Angeles Times, various school districts are asking parents to fork over cash in an effort to hold onto teachers after proposed budget cuts by Gov.

    College Campus Deemed "Too Dangerous" for Childcare

    "Safety" has now become the latest excuse for a college trying to duck responsibility for childcare. Ogeechee Technical College president Dawn Cartee announced the closure of the campus childcare center in Statesboro, GA, arguing that colleges are dangerous places for small kids. In a March 28 letter to parents, according to an article in The Statesboro Herald, Cartee wrote:
